Event Details

DJ\’s talk is titled \’Focus on the Process: Enabling the next generation of biotechnology\’. DJ will discuss how  in little has changed in experimental manipulation and data handling since the chemical synthesis of urea in 1828. Reactions are still stirred in round bottom flasks, liquids are still transferred by hand, and data is recorded in physical notebooks. This talk will focus on the ways that Emerald Therapeutics is working to change this state of affairs with the recently unveiled The Emerald Cloud Laboratory (www.emeraldcloudlab.com), which allows researchers to remotely run life sciences experiments in a central lab over the Internet. The origin, construction, and growth of the ECL (and the company as a whole) will be the focus of the talk, although it will also touch on larger trends for biotech start-ups in Silicon Valley and beyond.

DJ\’s Background:

D.J. Kleinbaum is the Co-founder and Co-CEO of Emerald Therapeutics. D.J. received his B.S. in Biological Sciences from Carnegie Mellon University and his Ph.D. in Chemistry from Stanford University. While at Stanford, he designed and synthesized new architectures for DNA-templated reactions that can be used to detect RNA in living cells under the direction of Professor Eric Kool. He is an inventor on five patents and his work has been published in the Journal of the American Chemical Society, Bioconjugate Chemistry, and Chemical Communications.

The Cell Hackers Club will be providing snacks and refreshments during this event.
