TSRI Professor Erica Ollmann Saphire heads an international collaborative effort to find antibodies to fight Ebola, including the experimental serum called ZMapp which may have saved the lives of two American aid workers stricken with the virus in Africa. Come hear from Dr. Saphire and representatives from two other San Diego organizations critical in the fight against Ebola, Mark O\’Donnell of PCI (Project Concern International), who is involved in humanitarian assistance for those stricken with the virus in Africa, and Kevin Whaley of Mapp Biopharmaceutical, who developed the experimental treatment.

Erica Ollmann Saphire has made headlines for her work on the Ebola and Lassa viruses, which point to ultimate targets for drugs and vaccines. Come hear about her fascinating research, from La Jolla to Sierra Leone.

Mark O\’Donnell – Chief Operating Officer, PCI (Project Concern International)
Mark O\’Donnell joined PCI in 1998, serving as its Chief of Operations since 2008, with responsibility for overseeing the implementation of PCI\’€™s country programs in Africa, Asia, and the Americas.

Kevin Whaley – Chief Executive Officer, Mapp Biopharmaceutical
Kevin Whaley has worked for the last 30 years on the development of multipurpose prevention technologies (MPTs), i.e. products that simultaneously prevent sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancy. He co-founded Mapp to develop antibody-based MPTs, therapeutics and mucosal vaccines that are appropriate for large, cost-sensitive, global health markets.
