- Article: Charles River to reopen Shrewsbury research facility
“Charles River Laboratories International Inc. will reopen its sprawling complex on South Street next year, nearly six years after shrinking demand had prompted the company to shutter the building. The Wilmington-based business is spending about $1.5 million to prepare and renovate about half of the facility listed in town records as covering about 412,000 square feet of space. Charles River plans to open during the first three months of 2016 with an undisclosed number of workers. Some likely will be transferred from other Charles River locations.
“Increasing demand from our clients for early-stage drug research services makes this the ideal time to reopen the site,” Amy Cianciaruso, a spokeswoman for the company, said in an email.Charles River is a contract research organization that performs laboratory studies, including animal testing, for drugmakers. The company employs about 8,500 people worldwide. It posted about $1.3 billion in revenue and about $127 million in profit during 2014.In Shrewsbury, the company expects to offer early-stage drug discovery services and bioanalysis, Ms. Cianciaruso said. Charles River expects to expand offerings based on client demands, she said. Charles River’s decision reflects a resurgence in the biotechnology community in Boston, said Michael Jirousek, a consultant who has worked at large pharmaceutical companies and founded Catabasis Pharmaceuticals Inc. Companies that have opted to stay lean hire outsiders to perform work, but still need to participate in the research, he said.” Full article
