The San Francisco Bay Area’s biomedical cluster was born out of pioneering work done by researchers at Stanford University and UCSF in the 1960s and 1970s. The companies that commercialized that work took root in South San Francisco, the Berkeley/Emeryville corridor, and Silicon Valley.

According to the San Francisco Center for Economic Development, the Bay Area is home to about 1,377 life science and biotech companies, employing more than 140,000 people. And the various sectors of life science San Francisco, from research and development, innovations and more, are still growing.
