Additive manufacturing, commonly called 3D printing, is a technology that has evolved rapidly and is revolutionizing many fields. For decades, biologists and biochemists have been using relatively crude and oversimplified models of complex biological structures for research and drug discovery and development as no other reliable models were available. Organovo is very active in applying our 3D printing technology toward building better models of animal tissue and organ systems to create the ultimate tools for research, drug development and eventually therapeutic and regenerative applications. We will review the recent history of liver model systems used for understanding drug induced liver injury that have led to our exVive3D ™ human liver tissue.
