The low success rate of pharmaceutical drug development leads to high drug development costs per approved drug. Additionally, the efficiency of a wide range of drugs and the ability to target the right patients are far below the levels desired by the healthcare and pharmaceutical community. This results in high healthcare costs and significant levels of side effects. Big Data and Network Biology offer new tools to understand the complex biology underlying individual diseases and overcome barriers to more efficient drug discovery and development. However, current approaches biological interpretation of biomedical data appear to be limited in their applications.
