The San Francisco Bay Area’s biomedical cluster was born out of pioneering work done by researchers at Stanford University and UCSF in the 1960s and 1970s. The companies that commercialized that work took root in South San Francisco, the Berkeley/Emeryville corridor, and Silicon Valley.
